Role of skeletal muscle health on poor lifestyle related type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk

Obesity has been blamed as the major factor mediating the harmful effect of unhealthy lifestyles on chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. However, recent studies have shown that unhealthy lifestyles can also lead to impaired muscle health. The purpose of this study is to understand how skeletal muscle plays a role in these chronic diseases linked with unhealthy lifestyle.


Eligibility Criteria

  • Inclusion criteria: (1) Identical or non-identical twins; (2) African Americans (AAs) or European Americans (EA); (3) Aged 18-50. Exclusion criteria: (1) Pregnant or nursing; (2)Previous diagnosis of major cardiovascular diseases including myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure or stroke; (3) Previous diagnosis of major lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); (4) On treatment of recent cancer diagnosis.
