Clinical Trial

Screening for celiac disease in all newly diagnosed pediatric patients with Depression, Anxiety and first visit to CHOG with ADHD

This study is to check if there is a correlation between celiac disease (intolerance to the protein gluten which is found in wheat, rye and barley) and behavioral health disorder like depression, anxiety, and ADHD (attention deficit-hyperactive disorder). The study requires us to draw a blood sample at the time of making a diagnosis of any of the above 3 conditions. The blood sample will be used to screen for celiac disease by testing for total serum IgA and IgA tissue transglutaminase antibody. If the test is negative nothing more needs to be done. If the test is positive we will inform the primary referring doctor who will then decide next steps which may include referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist. There will be no change in the treatment planning for the patient.

Eligibility Criteria

  • All patients between age 2-21 years coming to the behavioral health center at the Children's Hospital of Georgia Augusta with a new diagnosis of depression or anxiety or any child with a diagnosis of ADHD but coming to our clinic for the first time. Those children who already have celiac disease or are on a gluten-free diet will be excluded from the study.
