FUN FACT(S)

Looking at the sun makes me sneeze. It's called "achoo" syndrome. (I know it sounds like I made that up but it's a real condition. Also known as photic sneeze reflex, it is a genetically inherited autosomal dominant trait).

Hummingbirds can beat their wings more than 50 times per second, producing the humming sound from which they get their name. They may also eat more than twice their body weight a day to sustain their high metabolism.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

My primary research interest is wildlife toxicology. I am currently involved in research on avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM), a neurological disease affecting bald eagles and several species of waterfowl. The cause of AVM is unknown, but is suspected to be a neurotoxin originating from a species of cyanobacteria that grows on aquatic vegetation. My research involves the development of a cell line assay that can be used in detection and study of the toxic agent.
