Think b4u Drink: Alcohol & The Cancer Link

Alcohol use is the third leading modifiable risk factor that increases cancer risk. Drinking alcohol is associated with seven types of cancer.

Even less than one drink per day of any type of alcohol increases the risk of multiple common cancers including breast, head and neck, and esophageal cancers. In 2021, a study by scientists working for the American Cancer Society, published in Cancer Epidemiology, found that alcohol accounts for a “considerable proportion” of cancer diagnoses and deaths in all US states. Based on data from 2013 to 2016, drinking alcohol was tied to more than 75,000 new diagnoses of cancer and almost 19,000 deaths from cancer each year.

Globally, in 2020, an estimated 4.1% or 741,300 new cases of cancer or were attributable to drinking alcohol, with three-quarters of these occurring in males.

The goal of this semester's Student PSA project is to persuade someone to limit drinking alcoholic beverages to reduce the risk for cancer.
