July 26, 2024

It is with a heavy heart that CURS announces the passing of Dr. Maria Eugenia Sabbatini. Dr. Sabbatini passed on October 17, 2024, after an extended and courageous struggle with advanced kidney cancer. Dr. Sabbatini was a well-recognized Professor and Research Mentor here at AU in the Department of Biological Sciences and the Graduate School. Dr. Sabbatini mentored over three dozen undergraduate students, as well as multiple graduate students in her time at AU. She was the recipient of the student-nominated CURS 2020 Mentor Excellence Award and the recipient of many grants from CURS for equipment, and travel to present collaborative research with her students. She participated as a judge and mentor in many Undergraduate Research and Fine Arts (formerly PKP) Conferences and she was a 5 time mentor in our Summer Scholars Program (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022). We at CURS are honored to have been a part of her legacy with so many talented students and will miss her dearly. In her honor, Dr. Sabbatini’s family has established a fund supporting research by Biology students. The full obituary for Dr. Sabbatini, which includes a link for contributing to the scholarship fund is available at https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/martinez-ga/maria-sabbatini-12031976

A big THANK YOU to all undergraduate research mentors (over 130 of you) across AU's four campuses! CURS celebrated mentorship this past month through appreciation days and thank you cards from students. If you did not have a chance to thank a research mentor, do so today! Outstanding mentors demonstrate the qualities of clear communication of expectations and regular discussion of progress, challenges, and accomplishments a mutual openness to ideas, opinions, and collaboration an allowance of significant student responsibility to further a project's progress and provide teaching, scaffolding, and guidance to help students develop and deepen their knowledge and skills Students, you can still celebrate and thank your mentor with the CURS HIGH FIVE MY FACULTY award. There is no deadline; these awards can be given any time of the year. Nominated faculty receive a surprise visit to their class/office from CURS and their mentee for a special celebration.
