How do I find a faculty research mentor?
If you already know of a professor who is engaged in research that interests you, then prepare yourself to go meet with them to discuss possibilities of joining their team. If you are not sure where to begin, drop by for advisement with CURS so we can help guide your next steps. We can be sure you are ready to approach a mentor with all the right questions.
I’m not a science major, can I get involved?
Absolutely! All disciplines engage in scholarship or research where questions are asked and discoveries are made. The methods of different disciplines vary, as do the goals of the scholarly work. Talk to your professors if you want to find out more about what scholarship looks like in your area of interest.
Why do research? What do I get out of it?
Fun. Hands-on activities like research allow you to put your knowledge into action. In addition to the deeper understanding you gain from your involvement, you’ll practice time management skills, maybe acquire data analysis or interviewing experience, and perhaps add a presentation to your resume. Students who engage in research say they have more self-confidence and feel better prepared for life after college, whether bound for grad school or the job market.
Do I have to have a certain GPA?
Sorta. CURS is for all students, regardless of GPA; however, faculty members are more likely to accept you to work with them if they know you are serious about your academics. Make that show with your grades!
When should Iget involved?
Depends. Based on your major and course plans, some students get involved in scholarly collaboration with a faculty member as early as their freshmen year. Others may wait until their sophomore or junior year to focus on coursework first. Not surewhat’s right for you? Come get advised in our office.
Do I have to be in the Honor’s Program to work with CURS?
Nope. While every Honor’s Program student does a thesis (or research in his/her area, not all student scholars are in the Honor’s program. Not sure where to start? Come see us in the CURS office!
Do I get course credit for engaging in research?
Perhaps. Check with your home department to see if they offer a research course (usually
3990 or 4990). CURS also offers research courses usually for students working with
someone on the Health Sciences campus. It is very advantageous to have undergraduate
research on
your transcripts. That said, there are some students who engage in volunteer research
as well.
