Chemical and Biomolecular Analysis Facility

The Chemical and Biomolecular Analysis Facility offers services, expertise, and collaboration for the research community at Augusta University, other academic institutions, and for-profit companies.

Our main instrumentation includes high field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), circular dichroism spectrometer (CD), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).

Through the use of our instruments, the facility affords investigators the ability to monitor chemical reactions and protein stability, to determine molecular structure, to access purity including trace metal content, or to study other properties of a wide variety of materials.

The facility offers assisted instrument use to investigators or a data acquisition service. Consulting is available to assist with experimental design and data interpretation. University personnel who anticipate frequent use of an instrument may request training to become an independent operator.

General Rules

  • All new users are required to be trained by the facility staff prior to using an instrument unless they can demonstrate instrument competency
  • Reserve all instrument using the iLab management software.
  • Log in and log out using the log book next to the instrument.
  • If assistance is required for an experiment, please notify the facility director (Note: you will be charged for this). Periodic assistance with problems arising is not subject to an additional charge.
  • Reserved and unused time will result in the user’s laboratory being billed at the hourly rate. Cancellations must be made at least one hour prior to the scheduled session.
  • Prior calendar reservation is required for all instruments.
  • Safety goggles should be worn all the time in the sample preparation lab. Safety goggles should also be worn in the instrument lab when performing sample introduction to the instruments.
  • Lab coat should be worn all the time in the instrument room.
  • No food or drinks are allowed in the lab.
  • No radioactive, or highly dangerous biological or chemical samples are allowed in the lab.
  • Working with chemicals or preparing samples on the computer desks is not allowed.
  • Failure to adhere to these policies can result in the loss of instrument access.

Calendar

In order to reserve a time or request a service, use the following steps:

Reserve an equipment:

  2. Click "here" to login in as an Internal Augusta University user.
  3. Log in with your Augusta University username and password.
  4. Click on "list all cores".
  5. Click on "Chemical and Biomolecular Analysis Facility".
  6. Click on "Schedule Equipment".
  7. Find the instrument you wish to reserve and left click on it.
  8. Double click on the calendar on a time you wish to reserve (ex. If you want to create a time for 1-4 PM, double click on the 1-2pm block), a new window ‘Create a new reservation” will open. Fill all information in and click ‘Next’ to open a new window called ‘Reservation details’.
  9. Adjust the time so that it accurately reflects the time you want.
  10. When done, click "Save Reservation" on the bottom left.

This is assuming that your lab already has iLab setup correctly.
