Support that makes an IMPACT

Take a quick look into Pediatric Diabetes at Children’s Hospital of Georgia.

Type 1 Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas does not work, meaning it doesn’t produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells and fuel our bodies. Those with Type 1 Diabetes have to monitor their blood sugar daily and take insulin to keep their blood sugar level within a healthy range. Hyperglycemia occurs when blood sugar levels are too high, and hypoglycemia occurs when blood sugar levels are too low. Every day, the Children’s Hospital of Georgia cares for about 12 kids with diabetes.

Did you know a child with Type 1 Diabetes receives…

  • About 6 finger-sticks a day to check blood sugar levels, meaning 180 a month and 2190 a year.
  • Anywhere from 4 to 7 insulin injections a day, meaning 120 to 210 a month or 1460 to 2555 a year.
  • In total about 10 to 13 sticks a day, which comes out to 300 to 390 a month or 3650 to 4745 a year.

Common signs/symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes:

  • increased thirst
