General Surgery Residency Program Application Requirements

The General Surgery Residency Program at Augusta University offers five categorical positions each academic year. Applications are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Additional information regarding the program can be accessed via the American Medical Association's FREIDA Online.

To be competitive, a score of 220 and above on the USMLE Step I is desirable. Completion of USMLE Step II is not required at the time of application. One letter of recommendation from the chairman of the department of surgery at the applicant's medical school, and two additional letters of recommendation from other faculty/colleagues are required.

We sponsor only J1 visas. We do not require previous U.S. experience or set a minimum date from medical school graduation. We prefer not to set any specific requirements; please submit your application and it will be reviewed by the program director. ECFMG certification is not required at the time of application, but is required by the match. The yearly deadline for applications is February 1st.

If you are invited to interview for a categorical or preliminary general surgery position, please refer to the list below for available interview dates. Each interview day is preceded by a casual evening welcome reception. This reception gives applicants an excellent opportunity to socialize with faculty, residents and their spouses. Dress for the reception is casual.
