The faculty and staff of the Georgia Esoteric and Molecular (GEM) Laboratory provide diagnostic services for the diagnosis and comprehensive evaluation of disease primarily through the molecular analysis of tissues and cells. The faculty is comprised of pathologists and doctoral scientists.
The mission of the Georgia Esoteric and Molecular Pathology Laboratory at MCG-AU is aligned with that of the Institution in its three focus areas i.e. Patient care, Education, and Translational Research.
The GEM lab provides services under three groups
1) Clinical diagnostics and patient care via molecular diagnostic testing.
2) Education: medical student, resident and fellow rotations, and medical technology student clinical internship.
3) Translational Research: research support and services to faculty at AU campus; research support and services to clinical trials at AU.
Georgia Esoteric and Molecular (GEM) Laboratory, LLC, is located in the Murphey Pathology Building. The GEM Lab is a clinical diagnostic laboratory developed to provide state-of-the-art molecular diagnostics and cytogenetics. It is accredited by CLIA and the State of Georgia (GDHR) for high complexity testing. Board-certified pathologists and highly trained American Society for Clinical Pathologist (ASCP)-certified scientific staff provides guidance for utilization of new tests and interpretation of results.
The service and laboratory procedures conform to the standards prescribed by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 and other accrediting agencies. The faculty and staff meet the required qualifications. Continuous quality improvement activities are in place to ensure the quality of diagnostic services, timeliness of reports, safety requirements and quality laboratory activities.
