A. Bleakley Chandler, MD Resident Award for Academic Excellence in Pathology
The Chandler Award honors Dr. A. Bleakley Chandler, who for 50 years served as a member of the faculty, which included 25 years as Chair, in the Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. Dr. Chandler, Emeritus Professor of Pathology, epitomizes the intent of the Award in that he distinguished himself in teaching, service, research, and leadership. All members of the current housestaff and teaching faculty evaluate eligible residents for excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, clinical service, leadership, and collegiality. The Award is presented at the graduation ceremony by the Chair of the Department in the form of a monetary Award and a personalized plaque.
The 2020 - 2021 recipient of The Chandler Award is: Dr. Okechukwu Valentine Nwogbo
Dr. O. Valentine Nwogbo received the A. Bleakley Chandler award for excellence in academic pathology for the 2020-2021 academic year. He obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees from Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nigeria. He graduated from our AP/CP residency training program in June of 2021 and is pursuing a hematopathology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas in Houston, Tx. During his residency, he in excelled in teaching, scholarly activity, clinical service, leadership, and collegiality. He was a constant advocate for his junior residents and optimal patient care. We are exceptionally proud of Dr. Nwogbo’s accomplishments and look forward to seeing his future successes.
Stephen C. Peiper, MD House Staff Award for Excellence in Pathology Research
This Award honors Stephen C. Peiper, MD, who for 6 years served as a member of the Pathology Faculty and Chairman of the Department. Residents who displayed excellence in research are recognized with this Award. The criteria for selection is based on many factors including overall research design, hypothesis, and impact on human clinical disease. The Award is presented at the graduation ceremony by the Chairman of the Department in the form of a monetary Award and a personalized plaque.
The 2020 - 2021 recipient of the Stephen C. Peiper Award is: Dr. Okechukwu Valentine Nwogbo
Dr. O. Valentine Nwogbo also received the Stephen Peiper award for excellence in research for the 2020-2021 academic year. During his time at our training program, he was actively involved in scholarly activity. In the 2020-2021 academic year, Dr. Nwogbo contributed to medical literature with many peer-reviewed publications in PubMed listed journals. In addition to contributing to two interesting case reports in anatomic pathology, he was the first author on three different clinical pathology articles. He published articles on laboratory findings in obesity and difficulties in interpretation of immunofixation electrophoresis findings in the setting of light chain myeloma. He also published an institutional review in Blood analyzing stem cell mobilization using parathyroid hormone analog. We are exceptionally proud of Dr. Nwogbo’s scholarly activity and look forward to seeing his future scholarly pursuits as he continues his education and career in hematopathology.
Faculty Recognition for Outstanding Academic and Professional Contributions to the Pathology Residency Program
This Award honors a Faculty member who demonstrates outstanding teaching and devotion to resident success. Nominees are picked and voted on by the housestaff near the end of the academic year. The Award is presented at the graduation ceremony by the Chairman of the Department in the form of a personalized plaque.
The 2020 - 2021 recipient of the Faculty Award is: Dr. Joseph White
We would like to congratulate Dr. Joe White on receiving the 2020-2021 Faculty teaching award for his substantial contributions to resident education and mentoring. He shows significant enthusiasm and dedication towards resident learning and professional development. Dr. White takes an active role in teaching the residents and never misses an opportunity to review a case with a resident or medical student. Dr. White is also a forensic pathologist and spends a significant portion of his time teaching residents the many aspects of autopsy pathology. He is currently an assistant professor and the medical director of autopsy services at Augusta University. He is also co-director of the Augusta University forensic pathology fellowship at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Below is the master list of scholarly activities from all Pathology House Staff Members in the past academic year (2020-2021). For the upcoming 2021 Annual CAP meeting, our Department has an impressive 6 posters accepted. The Department is proud of the research completed by the Faculty and Housestaff. Essentially it is required that all Housestaff be scholarly productive to ensure their development of the skills for lifelong learning and can secure competitive fellowships. The Department provides amble time and resources to promote these endeavors including funds to attend National Meetings where original research is being presented as well as funds to conduct research.
