2015 Keynote Address

“Systems Medicine and Proactive P4 Medicine: Catalyzing a Revolution in Healthcare”
President of the Institute for Systems Biology, Dr. Leroy Hood

white male in blue suit

Dr. Hood is President of the Institute for Systems Biology. He was involved in the development of five instruments critical for contemporary biology—namely, automated DNA sequencers, DNA synthesizers, protein sequencers, peptide synthesizers, and an ink jet printer for constructing DNA arrays. These instruments opened the door to high-throughput biological data and the era of big data in biology and medicine. He helped pioneer the human genome program—making it possible with the automated DNA sequencer. Under Dr. Hood's direction, the Human Genome Center sequenced portions of human chromosomes 14 and 15.

“Hypothalamic Hormones: From Neuroendocrinology to Therapy of Cancer and Other Diseases”
Nobel Laureate, Dr. Andrew Schally

Andrew V. Schally, PhD., M.D.h.c., received his training in England, Canada, Sweden and USA. In the years 1954-1977 he worked in the field of neuroendocrinology. Dr. Schally’s group was responsible for the isolation and elucidation of the structure of hypothalamic LHRH. Dr. Schally was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1977 for his pioneer work on hypothalamic peptides. Grasping the therapeutic potential of hypothalamic hormones Dr. Schally switched to cancer research and he became an endocrine oncologist. He is a world leader on targeting hormone-related cancers and is largely responsible for the field of hormone ablation for the treatment of prostate and other cancers. Various classes of anticancer peptides including targeted to analogs peptide receptors on tumors were developed in his laboratory and are in clinical trials.

Keynote Address

“Career Development: A Case History and General Thoughts”
Shu Chien, M.D., PhD.

Shu Chien is a world leader in molecular, cellular, and integrative studies on bioengineering and physiology in health and disease. He has served as President of 6 scientific societies, including the American Physiological Society and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). Dr. Chien is member of all four US National Academies (Science, Engineering, Medicine, and Arts and Sciences). He also is a member of the Academia Sinica in Taiwan and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing (Foreign Member). He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Landis Award, the Poiseuille Medal, and the Founders Award of National Academy of Engineering. In 2009, he received the Presidential Prize in Life Sciences in Taiwan, and in 2011 he received from President Obama the National Medal of Science, the highest honor for scientists and engineers in the USA.
