Afterschool care is a promising primordial prevention strategy for CVD because attending afterschool care is associated with increased physical activity and improved cardiovascular health. Afterschool care is especially promising for children from low-income families, as they are at increased risk for premature CVD-related death, and their families often face systemic barriers to initiating and adhering to the recommended intervention for CVD risk factors. This study is a preliminary, quasi-experimental trial of Afterschool Rx, an intervention that provides children prescriptions to attend free afterschool care at existing, local programs (e.g., Boys and Girls Clubs or YMCA PrimeTime).
