Clinical Trial

Cognitive Brain Aging Reversal from Deep Brain Stimulation for Alzheimer

The purpose of our clinical trial is to test if deep brain stimulation of a subject with Alzheimer?s can result in the same, or better, cognitive and clinical status after two years than it was at the study start. Our study will have two groups, and is not blinded. The first group recruited will receive the intervention, a deep brain stimulation implant and therapy. They will receive clinical and cognitive neuropsychological testing before the intervention, and at regular intervals once the intervention starts. Testing will end two years after the intervention begins. The second group will receive identical testing but will not receive the intervention. This intervention, in animal work and one trial of Parkinsons?s subjects, resulted in improvement on aging-sensitive cognitive tasks. This device treatment has not been tested in Alzheimer?s disease.
