WELL 1023: Hiking, Backpacking and Camping: West Virginia
Professor: Abigail Drescher
Email: adrescher@augusta.edu

This course and study away opportunity serves two purposes. One purpose is to expose students to hiking and camping in the mountains. The other purpose is for students to reflect upon their outdoor experiences and service learning with Habitat for Humanity and apply it to their post-graduation life. Students will learn how to hike in an unfamiliar and challenging environment in West Virginia. Hiking, camping, service-learning and other outdoor activities will be used as discussions and reflections points for the student’s journey and experiences throughout college and post-graduation. It is suggested that students with 60 or more hours participate in this Wellness 1023 Study Away program. Topics to develop the student and prepare them for post-graduation include budgeting, cooking, basic house repair, navigation without GPS, adjusting to a new environment, and risk taking as part of life and career trajectory. Team building activities will take place that can be applied to the workplace and/or graduate school.
