If you were able to win one of these, it would make a major positive difference in your academic and professional career. This would come not just from financial support and mentoring opportunities, but also from prestige. For instance, being a Goldwater winner would be something mentioned about you as praise throughout your early career. Furthermore, some of these awards set you up to compete for other awards. For instance, winning a Goldwater puts you in good position to compete for a Rhodes or a Gates-Cambridge award. Each of these latter two would be part of your eulogy.
It is important to note that being a good or even a great student will not win you one of these opportunities. You must have a story to tell; a story you built through hard work and creativity that makes you stand out above the many other excellent students applying. Perhaps you started in undergraduate research as a freshman and have already had a journal article accepted. You might have started a service organization that is making a difference in people’s lives. The point is, you need to have something beyond good grades and membership in student organizations.
However, if you do not apply, you will not win.
