The protein in the picture is a voltage-gated sodium channel. This class of protein is responsible for the initiation of the action potential in nerve cells, and is the target for anti-epileptic and analgesic drugs. This particular one is called NavMs and is a prokaryotic homologue that functions the same as human channels. (at 2.5 A resolution it is the highest resolution sodium channel and the only one in an open, active conformation). Produced by synchrotron data from Soleil in France.
