Soprano Christi Amonson is an Assistant Professor of Voice and Director of the Opera Initiative. Amonson is an active soprano soloist, an Artist in Residence and Voice Faculty for the summer festival Opera dé San Luis Potosí in Mexico and she writes the Music Major Minute column for Classical Singer Magazine. Amonson earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in voice and theatre at the University of Arizona, where she was a Medici scholar and the winner of the President’s Competition. She earned her MM in voice at the Manhattan School of Music and her BM in music education at the University of Idaho. Dr. Amonson taught as an assistant professor at Troy University, an instructor at the University of Arizona, and as a lecturer for Idaho State University. She was a director of the Tucson Girls Chorus and has been a teaching artist for the Metropolitan Opera Urban Voices program, the Elaine Kauffman Foundation and the Concordia Conservatory in NYC. Dr. Amonson has been teaching classical and music theatre voice students for over 20 years and is an active member of NOA (National Opera Association) and NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) where her students have won state, regional and national awards.
Opera has been Christi’s calling card both as a singer and stage director. In 2008, Amonson founded the Southern Arizona Opera where she directed several operas in partnership with the Southern Arizona Symphony. As a regional singer, her roles have included Donna Anna, Elvira, Zerlina, Gilda, Adina, Gretel, Nanetta, Oscar, Adele, Yum Yum, the title roles in Naughty Marietta and The Merry Widow, Amy (Adamo’s Little Women), Menotti’s Monica and Lucy and she has premiered several new compositions. Of Verdi’s Nanetta, Opera News reviewed, "Amonson’s even scale and breath control were particularly note-worthy” and, "liquid silver."
Amonson’s international performances include an Opera Gala with the National Orchestra of Brazil, Mozart’s c minor mass in Lucca, Italy and she toured China and Mexico as a soloist with Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra. Regional concert engagements include the soprano soloist for Mahler IV (featured in Symphony Now Magazine) Carmina Burana, Barber’s Knoxville Summer of 1915, Poulenc’s Gloria, Mozart, Brahms & Schubert Requiems, Messiah and the premier of Rapaccini’s Daughter, available on CD thru SASO.org. At the Assisi, Italy ClarinetFest 2013 Christi sang Carl Vollrath’s Love Songs with Dr. Timothy Phillips to great acclaim. In the 2019/20 season, Christi will sing the role of Phoebe (Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder) in Augusta with the Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre and the role of Rosalinda (Die Fledermaus) Tucson, AZ.
