The Department of English and World Languages offers the following scholarships whose stipends are to be used for tuition, books, and fees at Augusta University. In addition, International Scholarships are awarded to students traveling abroad in the Salamanca program, and Mary Lou Kuhl Scholarships are used to support conference presentations and/or attendance. 

Each scholarship has particular requirements that must be met; some require writing samples and/or a recommendation by a professor that must be included with the scholarship application. Be sure to read the scholarship descriptions before printing out and completing the departmental application.

Jana Sandarg Scholarship

  • Applicant must be an undergraduate participant in the Salamanca, Spain Study Abroad (preferred) or other Pamplin-sponsored Study Abroad trip.

Pamplin Talent scholarship in creative writing

  • Applicant must be an English major, have demonstrated a strong interest in creative writing, must have achieved a 2.5 or better overall GPA, and have participated, at AU, in the area of creative writing for which the scholarship is awarded.

lillie butler johnson scholarship

  • Applicant must be an English or World Language major and/or Women's and Genders Studies minor with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, minimum major GPA of 3.5, and community/campus involvement and service. Preference given to students who have completed 48 hours towards the major.

Patricia Smith Lesher Essay Contest

  • Applicant must be an English major and have completed ENGL 1101 & 1102 (or 1113 & 1114); must submit literary research paper recommended by the professor in whose class it was written. Book award presented at the Pamplin Student Award Ceremony.

Patricia Smith Lesher Scholarship

  • Applicant must have completed ENGL 1101 & 1102 (or 1113 & 1114) and HUMN 2001 by the end of spring semester; must have demonstrated ability to read literature sensitively and pursue literary research and study profitably; must express a moral commitment to fund a similar scholarship in the future should his/her financial position so permit. Candidates will be evaluated on their average in upper-division English courses and in courses taken to fulfill composition & humanities requirements, overall GPA, and the degree to which they embody the traits of dedication, discipline, & sensitivity which distinguished Patricia Lesher.

Chelsea Anne Collins Scholarship

  • Applicant must be an Augusta University student majoring in English or World Language, demonstrate excellence in writing, and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

International Scholarship

  • Augusta University student who is a major or minor in a world language. Must be sophomore level or higher and must use the monies to study abroad in a University System of Georgia program offered in a country where French, German, or Spanish is spoken. Additional paperwork is required.

Edith Wright Bailey Scholarship in English Education

  • Applicant must have declared a major in English Secondary Education and have completed 2000-level Education sequence by the end of spring semester, must have demonstrated an ability to articulate in writing and conversation an astute appreciation of literature and its relevance of life, and must express a commitment to a teaching career. Candidates will be evaluated on their overall GPA and in courses taken to fulfill composition and humanities requirements. Candidates will also be judged on their dedication to teaching and their integrity, qualities manifested in the life of Edith Wright Bailey.

Mary Lu Kuhl  (Sand Hills Writers Scholarship)

  • Applicant must demonstrate an interest in Creative Writing by presenting original creative writing or attending creative writing sessions at a conference, complete ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102, complete or currently enrolled in at least one Creative Writing class and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA. Embody the traits of dedication, discipline and sensitivity which distinguished Mary Lu Kuhl, the donor.

  • Sand Hills Writers Scholarship Application

The following awards do not require an application; eligible students are selected by faculty committees.

  • Cynthia Fleming Kelly Award: This award is given once a year to a promising English major who plans to teach. The recipient will be a graduating English major, preferably, a non-traditional student who shows evidence of imagination and ingenuity. Selected by the Scholarship Committee. 
  • Goldburg Award: Outstanding English 1102 library research papers may be entered for the Goldburg Award. Thanks to an endowment established by the family of Rabbi Goldburg, an annual cash prize will go to the student writing the best 1102 research paper. 
  • McCrary English Award: This award is given once a year to a promising English major. Selected by the English faculty. Book award presented at Pamplin Award Ceremony.
