A key component of the plan was to establish an advisory committee to guide the College's diversity and inclusion efforts. The first group of advisors, comprised of representatives from the greater Augusta community, University, and College (students, staff and faculty), was convened in February 2014.
The College of Nursing Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in partnership with Pamplin College Women and Gender Studies is pleased to welcome Deirdre Cooper Owens to Augusta, Georgia! Dr. Cooper Owens will join us for a lecture entitled "Slavery and the Birth of American Gynecology."
Dr. Cooper Owens is an acclaimed historian and renown public speaker. Her recent book, Medical Bondage: Race, Gender, and the Origins of American Gynecology, traces the historical debt owed to enslaved women and Irish women in the development of American medicine (link here: https://www.deirdrecooperowens.com/writings/2018/8/7/medical-bondage-race-gender-and-the-origins-of-american-gynecology).
Dr. Cooper Owens is currently an Associate Professor of History at Queens College, CUNY and the Director of the Program in African American History at the Library Company of Philadelphia, the country's oldest cultural institution. In Fall 2019, Dr. Cooper Owens will become the only Black woman in the United States to lead a medical humanities program when she joins the University of Nebraska as Director for Humanities in Medicine.
