Didactic Teaching Conferences

A significant portion of the teaching within the training program occurs at the bedside during ICU rounds. The following represents the didactic teaching conference schedule for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Fellows conference:
Fellows conference takes place the each Wednesday morning at 10:00 am in the Moretz Library. Topics are presented on evidence-based medicine, research, professional development and critical care.

  • Evidence-based medicine:
Working in conjunction with the attending staff and other key interdisciplinary staff, residents are instructed on and actively participate in the conception, research, formulation and production of evidence-based medicine patient care guidelines for use in the ICUs. The intent is to both improve patient care and create a repository of guidelines that future, current and past trainees may access for use in their own ICUs once they leave GRUMC.
  • Research:
The research lecture is a didactic lecture from the faculty covering a particular aspect of scholarly activity such as study design, biostatistics, data analysis, abstract and manuscript preparation and submission, or poster and oral presentation. Current and future research projects within the department are discussed.
  • Professional development:
These lectures are intended to provide each resident with the education necessary to apply for employment in critical care, and function effectively post-training in the administration of an ICU. Topics include management, the interview process, professional societies and associations, hospital committees, practice management, billing and coding, clinical documentation, core measures, quality assurance programs and legal depositions.
  • Critical care:
Scholarly lectures from the SCC faculty, visiting professors and consultant subspecialty physicians present the breadth of critical care management with an emphasis on evidence-based medicine and the current state of the art.
  • Other conferences:
Fellows are expected to attend general surgery Grand Rounds, held Mondays at 7:45 am in the Moretz Library, and should be prepared to present at least one Grand Rounds before the completion of the training year. Fellows are also expected to participate in Journal Club, held once per month, and general surgery M&M, held each Monday at 7:00 am in the Moretz Library.
