MCG dean honors Keel, Braun, Hamrick at annual State of the College Address

Medical College of Georgia Dean David Hess, MD, gave his annual State of the College address on Friday and honored Augusta University President Brooks A. Keel, PhD, who has been a powerful advocate for the medical school; an MCG graduate who leads her alma mater’s admissions office; and a federally-funded investigator who leads MCG’s research efforts.

Keel, who has enjoyed a successful 40-year career in research and higher education administration, became president of Augusta University in 2015. Hess honored him with this year’s MCG Advocacy Award.

MCG shares plans to address physician shortage in state of college address

AUGUSTA, Ga. - On Friday, Dean Hess gave his annual State of the Medical College of Georgia address. Dean Hess calls it a historic year for Medical College of Georgia with the new partnership with Wellstar. “That financially stabilizes our health system, allows us to put a regional campus in Marietta, at Kennestone Hospital," he says. "And then, actually expands our digital health offerings. We do a lot of telemedicine and telehealth around the state.”

Some of those improvements are actually expansions like a new hospital coming to Columbia County in the near future.

$42 million to boost physician shortage challenges

The good news is that Georgia is growing. The bad news is the state has a huge shortage of doctors. Dr. David Hess, Dean of the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) made that point clear in his annual State of the College address. He said Georgia currently ranks 40th in the country in the number of primary care physicians.
