Graduate Research Assistantships
for Biomedical Science PhD Students 

Biomedical Science PhD students may be awarded financial support in the form of an assistantship.  This fall into two categories:

  • Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)
  • Graduate Research/Teaching Assistantships (GRA/GTA)

 

 

Graduate assistants (GRA, GRA/GTA) are enrolled students whose primary role at Augusta University is toward PhD degree completion. The assistantship position is intended to offset expenses while a student is enrolled, but is not ever to become the student’s primary role at Augusta University.  Students receiving one of these assistantships may not hold additional employment positions unless approval from The Graduate School is granted.  Selected students will receive GRA funding for the duration of the PhD program pending budget availability and satisfactory academic progress.

    Graduate Research Assistants are responsible for performing research-related activities under the supervision of The Graduate School and/or program research mentor.  Individuals who apply and are accepted into the Biomedical Sciences, PhD program at AU are automatically considered and, if approved, awarded a Graduate Research Assistantship. There is no formal GRA application that needs to be completed for consideration.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Enrolled in minimum 12 credit hours in Biomedical Sciences per semester
    • Satisfactory academic progress
    • Adherence to all policies and procedures of The Graduate School and Augusta University
    • Completion of approximately 13 hours of research-related effort weekly. This work effort is in addition to the research-related effort associated with the degree.

     

     

     

     

    Incentives:

    • Competitive annual stipend ($26,250 / year before taxes) $27,000( effective 8-1-2020)
    • Reduced tuition rate of $25 per semester
    • Coverage for single-person student health insurance

     

    • Students who compete successfully for eligible individual, external predoctoral fellowships will be rewarded for their efforts in the form of a supplement of up to $3,000 above the current Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) stipend.

    GRA/GTA’s are assigned responsibility for teaching duties that are related to his/her academic program under the direct supervision of a faculty member who is credentialed in the teaching discipline. GRA/GTAs are also responsible for maintaining duties in the research lab for the progression of their academic degree.

    GRA/GTA Eligibility Requirements:

    • Full-time enrollment in PhD program - Biomedical Sciences, PhD – 12 credit hours per semester
    • Satisfactory academic progress
    • Adherence to all policies and procedures of The Graduate School and Augusta University
    • Completion of approximately 13 cumulative hours of research and teaching effort weekly.  This work effort is in addition to the research-related effort associated with the degree.

Council of Graduate Schools April 15 Resolution

Resolution Regarding Graduate Scholars, Fellows, Trainees, and Assistants

“Acceptance of an offer of financial support* (such as a graduate scholarship, fellowship, traineeship, or assistantship) for the next academic year by a prospective or enrolled graduate student completes an agreement that both student and graduate school expect to honor. In that context, the conditions affecting such offers and their acceptance must be defined carefully and understood by all parties.”

“Students are under no obligation to respond to offers of financial support prior to April 15; earlier deadlines for acceptance of such offers violate the intent of this Resolution. In those instances in which a student accepts an offer before April 15, and subsequently desires to withdraw that acceptance, the student may submit in writing a resignation of the appointment at any time through April 15. However, an acceptance given or left in force after April 15 commits the student not to accept another offer without first obtaining a written release from the institution to which a commitment has been made. Similarly, an offer by an institution after April 15 is conditional on presentation by the student of the written release from any previously accepted offer.”

* This Resolution applies to offers of financial support only, not offers of admission.
