The DNP degree is a practice doctorate degree for registered nurses who desire to become an advance practice registered nurse in the specialty area of acute care, family, pediatric, psychiatric mental health or nurse anesthesia. The DNP degree is also available for nurse executives who impact healthcare outcomes through leadership at an executive’s system level.
Registered nurses with a BSN or MSN can enter one of the four DNP-Nurse Practitioner (NP) programs or Nurse Anesthesia and upon graduation can take the certification exam for that specialty. Certified advanced practice nurses with a MSN can enter the “traditional” post-masters DNP program to obtain the additional coursework required for the DNP degree.
There are two entry points to the DNP program:
(1) Registered nurses with a BSN or MSN can enter one of the four DNP-Nurse Practitioner
(NP) programs or Nurse Anesthesia and upon graduation can take the certification exam
for that specialty.
(2) Certified advanced practice nurses with a MSN can enter the “traditional” post-masters DNP program to obtain the additional coursework required for the DNP degree.
