Dr. CaughmanThank You Dr. Caughman!

Dr. Gretchen Caughman has announced her retirement after 35 years of exceptional service to Augusta University. In the various positions she has held, she has always been steadfast in her focus on one of Augusta University’s most prized assets-its students. In order to serve students in perpetuity Dr. Caughman, along with her husband Dr. Frank Caughman, have established the Drs. Gretchen & Frank Caughman Honors Scholarship Endowment to provide scholarships to deserving undergraduate students enrolled in the Augusta University Honors Program.

Dr. Caughman’s time at AU began with her 1985 hiring as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Oral Biology in the (now) College of Dental Medicine. During her tenure, she has gone on to hold many positions in the DCG and the Graduate School, eventually serving in her current role as Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost of Augusta University.

Dr. Caughman’s career exemplifies the best of teaching, research and service. Some of her most noteworthy successes include the expansion of our campus and new state-of-the-art facilities:

  • The Oak & Elm Hall student housing complex
  • The Dental College of Georgia
  • Medical College of Georgia
  • College of Science and Mathematics
  • School of Computer and Cyber

These expansions resulted in an increase of AU’s academic majors and certificate programs from 111 to 160. She also created the university’s first cybersecurity curriculum.  She’s also grown research funding to approximately $100 million annually.

Additional accomplishments include:

  • Establishment of the enterprise-wide Office of Diversity and Inclusion
  • Creation of the Division of Institutional Effectiveness
  • Launch of the Institute of Public and Preventive Health and the enterprise-wide Leadership Academy
  • The successful accreditation and subsequent reaffirmation of the consolidated Augusta University

There is no doubt her strong leadership and guidance have helped Augusta University become the bastion of higher education it is today.  Please remember, your gift to the Drs. Gretchen & Frank Caughman Honors Scholarship Endowment not only ensures Dr. Caughman’s enduring promise to AU, but fosters the success of students for decades to come.
