The culture of Augusta, Georgia is influenced by the many different perspectives and histories of its community members, as well as its own history. Another major influence on the culture of the city is the annual Masters golf tournament held in April of each year. The city hosts a robust music scene, as evidenced by James Brown, Jessye Norman, and Wycliffe Gordon. The writer Frank Yerby and visual artist Jasper Johns were Augusta natives as well.
We know that art and culture contribute to the ‘liveability’ of a place to create
a good quality of life and sense of local
identity. Augusta University's strong commitment to this ideal includes providing event spaces, originating new art and compositions, and highlighting existing talents and organizations. From artists in residence to gallery openings to the work of our own Augusta University Arts Council, our contributions to and promotion of culture and the arts in the Augusta area help to create a sense of place and a sense of home.
