JOHN F. BEARD AWARD FOR COMPASSIONATE CARE

This award, endowed by William Porter “Billy” Payne, chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club, and his wife, Martha, was established in 1998 in memory of Mrs. Payne's father, who died of cancer the year before. It honors Augusta University President Emeritus Francis J. Tedesco and Dr. Mark F. Williams (MCG '88), who treated Mr. Beard during his hospitalization at Georgia Regents Medical Center.

This award is intended to honor the highest ideals and achievements in compassionate health care service at Augusta University, to foster and encourage habits of compassion and kindness, and to identify an individual unselfishly devoted to patients who demonstrates compassion in the Augusta University community. Students in all Augusta University colleges are eligible.

Criteria
A graduating student considered to have performed significant, meritorious, and compassionate service, without expectation of recognition or reward, to Augusta University patients, families or community. The academic record of nominees is not considered. Judges are asked to select the person they feel has shown the most extraordinary compassion while providing health care. There are no specific selection criteria, however, the Board of Selectors will consider whether the nominee:

  1. Identified with patients and worked to resolve their non-medical concerns
  2. Devoted a significant amount of time to his/her patient
  3. Helped patients overcome unusual challenges
