Professor Octavia Garlington was born in the Republic of Panama and lived in the Panama Canal Zone until she left for college in 1945. She received her baccalaureate degree in biology from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC., and shortly after accepted a position at Agnes Scott College in the biology department and later worked as Assistant to the Dean Students. Nine years and a few art courses later, Octavia became a member of the Class of 1961 in the Medical Illustration Graduate Program at the Medical College of Georgia.

After graduation, Octavia remained at MCG to become an Instructor in the program, eventually moving up through the ranks to full Professor. She served briefly as Chief of Art Services, Division of Biomedical Communications at MCG, and later served as Acting Director of the graduate program for a period. In 1968, she helped to design the faculty regalia for the Medical College of Georgia, and in 1984 she designed the MCG flag. Octavia retired from daily teaching responsibilities in 1990. As an Emerita Professor, Octavia participates in special seminars on the history of medical illustration and on the development of the Medical Illustration Graduate Program.

Octavia has been very active in the profession of medical illustration. She has been a Professional Member of the Association of Medical Illustrators since 1964. She has served on the Board of Governors for a total of twenty years, has held the offices of Vice Chairman, Vice President and Corresponding Secretary, and has chaired numerous important committees in the organization. In 1988 she was elected a Fellow of the AMI.

During a long and distinguished career Octavia has received many awards and honors. She twice has received the Outstanding Service Award from the Association of Medical Illustrators. In 2001, Octavia received the Brödel Award for Excellence in Education from the AMI. Here at MCG, Octavia was elected to Alpha Eta, the honor society for Allied Health Science, and has received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the School of Allied Health Sciences. She also twice has received the Distinguished Service Award from the MCG Faculty Organization. In 2004, Octavia received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Allied Health Sciences Alumni Association.

Professor Steven J. Harrison received his BS and MS degrees in Medical Illustration from the Medical College of Georgia (now the Georgia Health Sciences University) and a PhD in Art from the University of Georgia, Athens. The title of his dissertation was “The Maintenance of Traditional Methods and Symbolism in Southwestern Native American Art."

After graduation, he held positions at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and at the Univ. of Texas Health Sciences Center at Dallas. Steve was also the Medical Art Director at the Arizona Heart Institute, and was Artist-in-Residence at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

Since 1994, Steve has been a member of the Board of Certification of Medical Illustrators (BCMI) and he is currently vice chairman of the BCMI. He is also an active member of the BioCommunications Association (BCA, formerly the Biological Photographic Association), and is a Fellow of that professional association. In 2009, the BCA presented him with its highest honor, the Louis Schmidt Award, for outstanding contributions to the progress of biomedical communications.

Steve has been an active member of the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) since 1972; he is a Fellow of the AMI and past Chairman of the Board of Governors. In 2006, Steve received the prestigious Brödel Award for Excellence in Education from the AMI. Throughout his career, Steve has received many awards for his illustrations, including an Emmy Award (Rocky Mountain), several CINE Golden Eagles and awards from the Chicago and New York film festivals.

Steve joined the faculty of the Dept. of Medical Illustration in 1991 as an Asst. Professor. On July 1, 2011 he was confirmed as full Professor. In 1993, he became Chairman of the department. Steve retired on October 31, 2011. As an Emeritus Professor, Steve participates in special seminars on the history of medical illustration, the development of the Medical Illustration Graduate Program, traditional illustration techniques, and business practices.
