José R. Conejo-Garcia, MD, PhD,

Chair, Department of Immunology                    Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL

Keynote talk:

"The epigenetic organizer SATB1 governs the
immune landscape in ovarian cancer"

Dr. Conejo-Garcia received his early training in Spain, earning his MD from the University of Zaragoza, followed by a residency at the University Hospital of Guadalajara, and his PhD in molecular oncology from the University of Alcala. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship studying pancreatic cancer at the University of Bern in Switzerland and another fellowship researching tumor immunology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently the Department Chair of Immunology at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL. The goal of his research program is to identify and target mechanisms governing the balance between immunosuppression and protective immunity in the tumor microenvironment, with an emphasis on the role of cancer-driven pathological myelopoiesis. By combining translational understanding and clinical specimens with mechanistic studies in mouse models, his research program has contributed to elucidating multiple mechanisms governing protective immunity against cancer, as demonstrated by >100 manuscripts that total >8,200 citations. This research traces its roots to his postdoctoral work, which helped unveil the role of spontaneous T cell responses in ovarian cancer patients. His subsequent independent studies have been funded by federal grants that currently support a combination of productive basic and translational researchers in his laboratory, all of whom focus on the immunobiology of cancer.

Although retreat registration includes heavy hors d'oeuvres on Thursday and a continental breakfast and boxed lunches on Friday, you may wish to dine out for dinner.
