About the Program
Established in 1948, we are the oldest graduate program in medical illustration in
the world, and are the only program to confer the degree of Master of Science in Medical
Illustration (MSMI). We have been continuously accredited since 1967, and are one
of just four programs in North America accredited by the Commission on Accreditation
of Allied Health Education Programs.
Our comprehensive five-semester (21 month) program combines rigorous training in the
health sciences, graphic arts, animation, communications and education. The curriculum
is specifically designed to enable the student to excel as a professional medical
illustrator. Our award-winning faculty guide the students through problem-based assignments
that are planned to provide not only factual knowledge but practical experience as
well. Students learn the fundamentals of, and gain mastery in, visual storytelling
for science using a variety of media, including: illustration, animation, and interactive
media. Students learn to manage projects from ideation and formative research, through
design and production, to distribution and evaluation.
The Medical Illustration Graduate Program at AU has a long track record of producing
outstanding professional medical illustrators and animators. Program graduates are
known for their leadership skills, and many become successful entrepreneurs. Year
after year, our students have a better than 95% positive placement after graduation.
