Political Science Concentration

Political Science ConcentrationAre you interested in American politics? International affairs? Critical issues such as health, the environment, civil rights? Do you want to study these subjects and pursue a career based on your interest? If so, you should select political science as a major.

Political science is the study of government and public policy and the political behavior of individuals and groups. Political science uses both humanistic and scientific perspectives and skills to examine the United States, all countries and regions of the world, and international relations.

Political science majors acquire skills in writing, communications, and analysis that are critical to a liberal arts education. A liberal arts education prepares students to think independently, with tolerance for others and concern for current affairs.


International Studies Concentration

Major in International Studies

International Studies is designed to enable and encourage students to become more proficient in understanding global affairs. The curriculum combines a student's choice of area studies (30) hours in Political Science with his or her choice (15 hours) of a number of courses offered in the Departments of History, Sociology, Languages, Literature and Communications, Psychology and the College of Business Administration.

The concentration in International Studies requires language proficiency and/or the study of statistics and/or computer science and mastery of the methodological and theoretical perspectives of the discipline.

The education and training provided by this concentration will provide a background for a career in government, business, education, and communications or to pursue advanced degree(s) in Political Science, International Relations, International Law or International Business.


Security Studies Concentration

Security StudiesThe Security Studies track provides students with a practical and theoretical understanding of  current and future security challenges facing the international community and the United States. 

The tracks seeks to expose students to the security issues inherent in a rapidly changing world.  The track places special emphasis on the:  causes and effects of international and civil conflict, the sources of terrorism, terrorism and counter-terrorism strategies, and security issues that affect national, regional, and global security.

The track provides students with a background to pursue a career pertaining to security related policy analysis or graduate work in the fields of international relations and security studies. 


Legal Studies Concentration

Major in Legal Studies

The Legal Studies track is open to Political Science majors only and is designed to aid students in their effort to orient their course of study to a particular purpose or goal.

It will prepare students for careers in law-related fields, federal and state governments, public and private interest groups, or business and management.

In addition, the track can provide a foundation for the ongoing study of law or for graduate study in Political Science.
