Study Description: Salt intake is highly related to increased risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease, and other diseases. Holding on to excess sodium, which we refer to as sodium retention, can occur during mental stress, and sodium retention can affect the brain in such a way that it is more likely to malfunction during stress. Additionally, sodium retention causes your blood pressure to increase and remain increased until the stressor has ended. This response can lead to a higher risk for the development of hypertension and organ damage, including damage to specific regions of brain. Dementia caused by damage to brain cells affects the ability of the brain cells to communicate with each other altering thinking, behavior and feelings. The purpose of the study is to determine if stress-induced sodium retention will increase CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone) leading to brain damage and contributing to memory loss in subjects with chronic hypertension. This study will also try to determine if factors such as ethnicity/race and gender have a role in this process.

Eligibility Criteria: Inclusion Criteria will include subjects with mild to moderate dementia (MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) score between (10-26) age between 18-80 years. The exclusion criteria is as follows: No caregiver is able to provide informed consent in accordance with institutional guidlines Subjects using beta blockers for controlling hypertension pregnant women or nursing mothers early life traumatic experience (e.g. a child exposed to sexual or physical abuse or the death of a parent).

Compensation Explanation: Each subject will receive a $20.00 for completing the screening process; a $20.00 for completing the testing protocol (test day); and a $20.00 if they beat the driving stress test - totally up to a total of $60.00 in Walmart gift cards.
