The Augusta University Jazz Ensemble is a college course for credit as well as a music ensemble. Under the direction of Jazz Studies Director Dr. Rob Foster, this ensemble provides students with performance experience in a big band and/or combo setting. Through rehearsals and performances, the participants develop stylistic awareness and performance skills associated with American jazz and popular music. These skills are applicable to a wide variety of jazz styles and improvisational music. The ensemble performs regularly on the Augusta University campus as well as in schools and numerous other venues. The Jazz Ensemble is one of the many jazz-related course offerings in the Augusta University Department of Music, and is a key component of the Jazz Studies program.
Wycliffe Gordon is Augusta University Department of Music’s Artist-in-Residence, and works with the Jazz Ensemble as well as teaching other courses, thus providing Augusta University’s music students the opportunity to study with an artist who is recognized and acclaimed worldwide as a top-level performer and educator.
