Our Mission

The primary mission of our program in Neuroradiology is to provide our fellows with a high quality education in all aspects of diagnostic neuroradiology, including adult and pediatric neuroradiology, head and neck imaging, diagnostic angiography, myelography and interventional neuroradiology basic procedures. A neuro ultrasound rotation with color doppler and trans-cranial doppler is also included in this training.

The fellowship goals are the development of proficient skills in neuroradiologic diagnostic imaging (magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, neuro-ultrasound, head and neck radiology, pediatric neuroradiology) and neuroradiologic procedures (diagnostic neuro-angiography and myelography, plus basic neurointerventional skills) in a supervised academic environment.

About Our Program

The Neuroradiology Section of the Department of Radiology at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. offers a one-year ACGME-accredited Neuroradiology Fellowship. Applicants for this position should be graduates from an ACGME-accredited Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program and should be board eligible or already certified by the American Board of Radiology. A second year of Neuroradiology training is optional, as a junior faculty position (Instructor) upon discussion of career goals and strengths.

The type and complexity of neurological problems at the Augusta University Medical Center provide excellent training for our fellows. The superbly equipped and well-staffed department delivers quality patient care, provides opportunity for education and research, and functions as a problem-solving resource for Georgia's physicians. The fellowship caseload is provided by the care rendered on patients at the Augusta University Medical Center and the Children's Hospital of Georgia.

Fellows gain experience using state-of-the-art equipment including spiral CT's, echoplanar MRI's, biplane digital angiography, digital radiology and fluoroscopy, and image manipulation on computer workstations.


Neuroradiology Fellowship Educational Program

The one year ACGME-accredited neuroradiology fellowship program is designed for radiologists interested in acquiring expertise in all aspects of neuroradiology practice. This program fulfills the criteria for Membership in the American Society of Neuroradiology, and prepares the ABR-certified trainee to take the oral examination conducive to the Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Neuroradiology given by the American Board of Radiology.

This program is subdivided into alternating neuroimaging and neuro-procedures rotations, each one lasting four weeks. The neuroradiology fellow will undergo an intense neurovascular and myelographic training under strict faculty supervision during the initial procedures rotation,, focused to develop proper procedure skills or enhance previously acquired individual skills, with emphasis on pertinent neuroanatomy and neurophysiology concepts. Neuroimaging rotations will encompass all the spectrum of adult and pediatric neuroradiology and head and neck imaging, including trauma, spine, neuro-oncology, vascular and degenerative conditions.

The neuroradiology fellow is in charge of the preparation and presentation of weekly Neuroradiology-Neurosurgery Conferences. He/she also has active participation in the ENT-Neuroradiology monthly conference and other inter-departmental conferences, as well as the department's Journal Club.

During the initial three months of training the neuroradiology fellow is expected to develop proficiency in the performance and interpretation of lumbar, thoracic and cervical myelography as well as to become an efficient assistant angiographer for performance of routine neuroangiography. During the rest of the training year the neuroradiology fellow is given increasing responsibility in the performance, supervision and interpretation of neuroradiology procedures and of neuro-imaging procedures. In addition, progressive teaching responsibilities and resident supervision duties are also given beginning with the second quarter of training.

We encourage research efforts and responsibilities during and after the second quarter of training, with a required development of a research project suitable for presentation at the American Society of Neuroradiology meeting or suitable for submission to the American Journal of Neuroradiology or other peer-reviewed radiology journals. An abstract on this research project is expected by the third week of December. The training program will cover travel and lodging expenses for presentations at national meetings. The fellow will also be involved in the development and presentation of several conferences for the Neuroradiology Categorical Course given to our Diagnostic Radiology residents.


Program Objectives

Objectives For Ongoing Tasks Throughout The Program

  1. Prepare and present weekly neuroradiology-neurosurgery conferences.
  2. Prepare and present monthly ENT-neuroradiology conferences.
  3. Select specific papers for Journal Club participation.
  4. Prepare and present monthly neuropathology cases, obtain all neuropathologic correlations on assigned cases.

First Quarter

      1. Develop proficiency in pertinent applied neuroanatomy and neurophysiology.
      2. Develop proficiency in the performance and interpretation of lumbar, thoracic and cervical myelography.
      3. Develop proficiency as an assistant angiographer for diagnostic neuroangiography.
      4. Develop proficiency in the prescription, supervision and interpretation of all neuroimaging studies.

 

Second Quarter

      1. Progress in responsibility for performance and supervision of neuroradiology procedures.
      2. Progress in responsibility for prescription and supervision of neuroimaging studies.
      3. Share responsibility for teaching and supervising residents and medical students.
      4. Develop a research proposal suitable for a research project that could be presented at a major neuroradiology meeting.

Third and Fourth Quarters

      1. Develop proficiency in vascular and brain neuro-ultrasound.
      2. Progress in research project, to be presented at a national or regional meeting, and/or at the MCG Neuroradiology Conference by late April.
      3. Progress in consultation dynamics and physician-interaction skills.
      4. Demonstrate progressive depth of knowledge in all neuroradiology core topics.

Additional Year of Neuroradiology Training

Neuroradiology fellows with interest in following an academic career or in developing special areas of expertise in vascular neuroradiology, neuro-imaging, pediatric neuroradiology or other subspecialty areas within neuroradiology will have the opportunity to enhance their expertise by performing an additional year as an Instructor in Neuroradiology. This is a junior faculty position with corresponding compensation, fringe benefits and clinical, teaching and research responsibilities. Its goal is to train mature subspecialty neuroradiology experts that can thrive and contribute in an academic environment. This additional year emphasizes the development of research, supervisory and teaching skills as well as clinical skills. This extra year also fulfills the criteria for Senior Membership in the American Society of Neuroradiology.


Call Schedule and Benefits

Neuroradiology call is by beeper, tied to the neurointerventional faculty call schedule. The fellow will have fifteen (15) work days of vacation, which are scheduled on an individual basis. Salary and benefits are at a PGY-6 level.

The fellowship program sends trainees to a comprehensive one-week course in neuroradiology and head and neck radiology (e.g. Harvard Medical School Neuroradiology-Head and Neck Review Course or its equivalent) paid by the Department of Radiology.
