Research Interests

The primary objective of our research program is to understand the pathogenesis of cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus ocular infections by using mouse models and organatypic retinal culture models. Our current work includes the investigation of the role of autophagy and inflammasome in innate immune responses and neuron death and design minimally invasive treatment protocols which inhibit ongoing viral infections or enhance innate immune response. We will also determine the site and mechanism of RIP3 activation and its relationship to the innate immune response involving NFkB and the inflamasome, which will help define the role played by RIP3 in death of uninfected bystander retinal cells which could occur either through direct effects such as necroptosis or indirect effects such as apoptosis induced by molecules downstream of the inflammasome, NFkB.
