Recycling and Collection of Writing Instruments

What happens to your old pens, sharpies, markers, pencils?

Now you can recycle them!!!

Augusta University is joining Sanford in a Writing Instrument Collection and Recycling Program. This is a national program that allows for the collection and repurposing of used writing utensils. Writing instruments are traditionally non-recyclable, but by launching this program, Sanford TERRACYCLE and Staples provided a solution for the collection and reclamation of used writing instruments. We have decided to participate by collecting our writing instruments. We will get $0.02 per acceptable writing instrument collected that will be paid to GHS Children's Medical Center. The used writing instruments are shipped directly to TERRACYCLE and then dissembled into component parts. The reclaimed materials are then used to create a wide range of products. Environmental Benefit. This program provides an option for directly diverting writing instrument waste that would typically be destined for a landfill. To date, TERRACYCLE has diverted more than 1.2 billion pieces of garbage from ending up in landfills.
