The ideal Summer STAR applicant is one who has a sincere interest in pursuing a graduate education in biomedical sciences through a PhD or MD/PhD program. Acceptance into the program is on a competitive basis. The members of the STAR program committee, the Dean of The Graduate School and/or the Director of the STAR program are responsible for all final decisions.

  • The following items must be received in the STAR office, by the posted deadline, before your application packet is considered complete and eligible for consideration by the STAR committee for acceptance review:

    1. Completed STAR application
        1. After you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation email from the STAR program within three business days. If you do not receive a confirmation, please email us at
    2. Official college transcript (s); requested by the applicant to be sent directly to the STAR office via postal mail. Official electronic transcripts are also accepted.

    3. Two letters of recommendation with accompanying STAR Recommendation Form requested by the applicant to be sent directly to the STAR office. Please note one recommendation must be submitted from a current mentor or professor.

    *To complete the fillable PDF you will need Adobe Reader. Once installed please open the STAR Recommendation form in Adobe Reader to complete the document.

  • 18 years or older by start of the STAR session
  • Completion of at least undergraduate freshman year in college
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 in science courses
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program (Candidates who have already graduated from undergraduate college or will be graduating in Spring 2018 are not eligible for this program). Students currently enrolled in specialized 4 plus 1 or other types of accelerated degree programs should contact The Graduate School to discuss potential eligibility
  • Proof of current Health Insurance Coverage that extends throughout the duration of the Summer STAR Program
  • United States citizenship (or hold permanent resident status) or international students currently enrolled in US college/university holding a student non-immigrant visa. (It is the responsibility of the individual applicant to check with the international office at their home institution to determine eligibility for the STAR program and the proper procedures necessary to follow if accepted)
  • Proof of current social security number for employment purposes, with original card for documentation

The STAR application will be unavailable from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time and occasionally on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. We apologize for any inconvenience and encourage you to complete and submit your STAR application during times when the STAR application is accessible.
