CRDTS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)


1. Is there a fee to the candidate to take the CRDTS examination at Augusta University?

YES. There is a facility fee (site fee) above the examination fee charged by CRDTS. Current facility fees are:

  • DENTAL - $445.00
  • DENTAL HYGIENE - $165.00

Facility fees must be received by Augusta University two (2) weeks prior to the scheduled exam date.

Dental Candidates: You may use a credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover) to pay the facility fee online at augustahealth.org/dentalpay. This link will take you to The Dental College of Georgia Patient Account Payment website where you will need to enter '2132525' in the Patient Account Number field, and you will need to enter your personal information (name and last four digits of your SSN) in the patient fields. Or, you may pay the facility fee with a cashier’s check, certified check, or money order payable to The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University. The candidate’s full name and CRDTS Candidate ID number must be written on the check or money order. Personal checks will NOT be accepted for payment. Mail payment to:

2. Does Augusta University provide patients?

NO. It is the responsibility of each candidate to provide their own patients. Augusta University does not have a broad patient pool and does not allow applicants access to patient records. Securing back-up patients is strongly advised. The board requires that candidates make arrangements for their patients to receive follow-up care if treatment during the exam is unsatisfactory.

All questions regarding eligibility of patients and/or types of patients must be answered through the Central Regional Dental Testing Service, Inc. (CRDTS) Central Office at 785-273-0380 or info@crdts.org.

3. Will I have access to screen patients and/or take x-rays of the patients I bring in?

Treatment of patients within The Dental College of Georgia is restricted to academically registered students only, except on the days of the CRDTS examination. Access to our facilities is only permitted through an orientation course that is offered the week prior to the Summer Examination. You must be registered in this course. The cost of this course is $500.00 for Dentists (rates are subject to change and are not guaranteed). 4. Does Augusta University provide instruments or rent instruments?

Instruments are available for rent.  The cost is the same for renting one or more instruments.  

Dental (all parts of the exam OR clinic exam only):

  • Includes handpieces and instrumentation
  • $6,000 Total Charge - will be charged to MasterCard, Visa or Discover
  • $1,000 Non-refundable rental fee
  • $5,000 Security deposit - will be credited back to credit card after instruments have been returned to the 4th floor Collection Area and checked

Dental (simulation exam only):

  • Includes handpieces and instrumentation
  • $3,000 Total Charge - will be charged to MasterCard, Visa or Discover
  • $500 Non-refundable rental fee
  • $2,500 Security deposit - will be credited back to credit card after instruments have been returned to the 4th floor Collection Area and checked

Dental Hygiene:

  • $1,500 Total Charge - will be charged to MasterCard, Visa or Discover
  • $350 Non-refundable rental fee
  • $1,150 Security deposit - will be credited back to credit card after instruments have been returned to the 4th floor Collection Area and checked

Candidate must present credit card (MasterCard, Visa or Discover) to the 1st Floor Business Office no later than 3:00pm the Friday of the Board Examination. PLEASE NOTE: Candidates assigned to take the simulation exam the Friday of the Board Examination must present credit card (MasterCard, Visa or Discover) to the 1st Floor Business Office no later than 3:00pm the Thursday prior to the Board Examination. We are not able to accept checks for instrument rental fees; these fees must be paid with a credit card. The candidate's credit card will be charged the full amount (e.g., $6,000 or $3,000 for Dental). The candidate will be given a rental slip to present to the 4th floor Dispensary for instrument pick-up the morning of the examination. The candidate will return instruments to the 4th floor Collection Area where an inspection of the instruments will be made. If all instruments are returned undamaged, the 4th floor Collection Area will give the candidate a statement indicating that their credit card will be credited the refundable amount (i.e., security deposit). The cost for any missing instruments will be deducted from the refundable amount. The refund will be applied to the account by Tuesday following the Board Examination. 5. What should I do if the facility's equipment malfunctions during the examination?

If you should experience any difficulty with facility's equipment during the examination, do not attempt to make repairs. A qualified equipment technician will be available in the clinic. Inform the clinic assistant of any equipment problems.

6. Will the use of chairside dental assistants be allowed?

YES, but Augusta University is not responsible for supplying chairside assistants. Candidates are responsible for supplying their own chairside assistant.

7. Will I be allowed access to the school's facilities?

We invite potential dental and dental hygiene candidates to visit Augusta University to become acquainted with our facilities. The clinical facilities will be available for inspection by prior appointment only on Mondays from 8:00-11:00 a.m. and on Wednesdays from 1:30-4:00 p.m. Please email Ashley Funderburg at asfunderberg@augusta.edu to arrange a tour.

8. Will candidates be allowed to access the clinic early on exam days?

Dental candidates may access the clinic at 7:00 a.m. on each exam day. Dental hygiene candidates may seat their patients and prepare their assigned treatment areas 45 minutes prior to the published patient approval time.

9. What type of handpiece fits the units at the facility?

Handpieces and all instruments must be supplied by the candidate (unless rented from Augusta University; see #4 above). If you intend to use fiber optics, then you must have a handpiece that fits a 4-hole I.S.O. coupling. All clinical chairs are equipped with built-in DENTSPLY 30K cavitrons. If you have questions concerning our equipment, please email Ashley Funderburg at asfunderburg@augusta.eduPLEASE NOTE: Do not bring KAVO handpieces or KAVO ultrasonic scalers (hygiene exam). Only handpieces that connect to a standard 4-hole I.S.O. coupling will work in our clinic.

10. Does Augusta University provide dentoforms for this exam?

NO. Candidates must supply their own dentoform as specified by CRDTS. The dentoform must be purchased in advance from Acadental Inc. on their website at www.acadental.com or by calling 888-585-0678 (toll free) or 913-384-7390. Chair-mounted manikin heads with shrouds are supplied to candidates by The Dental College of Georgia. Dentoforms will be mounted in manikin heads on the operatory chairs.
