English as a Second Language



This course is intended to develop the students’ basic skills of English listening and speaking so as to lay a foundation for their advanced studies in English and to enable them to meet their professional or academic goals. Each unit of the course starts from the inputs of vocabularies from listening, and then proceed to grammar and sentence patterns before speaking practice activities are conducted at the end. Catering to the needs of students, this course provides various forms of practice activities including group discussion, presentation, survey, interview, etc. to improve step by step students’ practical skills in listening and speaking, while expanding their vocabularies and grammatical knowledge. In this course, students are trained not only in terms of linguistic competency but also interpersonal communicative skills.


Prof. Zheng Jizheng, Ph.D in English and Literature, has been engaged in teaching English as the second language for over ten years, and has delivered more than 10 kinds of courses of English for specific purposes, including  Spoken English, Business English Writing, Business English Reading, College English, Reading of English Magazines and Newspapers, English for Customs Professionals, Linguistics, etc. He has also achieved many accomplishments in translation interpretation, especially in the field of business and law. So far he has translated over half a million words in total from English to Chinese and interpreted for over 100 hundred sessions of international conferences, workshops and meetings. At present, he is interested in academic writing and teaching methodologies of TESOL. He is now also leading a team on the project of compiling an English-Chinese dictionary for Customs purpose.

The registration fee is $215. Textbooks and all other materials will be included in the registration fee.


Parking is available on the Summerville campus with a valid parking permit, available from the campus parking office. Students are responsible for their parking fees.

Registrations cancelled prior to October 9 will be refunded, minus a $25 administrative fee.

Augusta University is not responsible for any circumstance making it impossible to attend their continuing education courses due to acts of God, war, government regulations, disaster, strikes, civil disorder or curtailment of transportation facilities. If Augusta University cancels a continuing education course you will be refunded your registration fee.
