To present to the general practitioner, dental sub-specialists, and staff, a comprehensive review of the management of medical emergencies in the dental office. The hands-on presentation will review the three critical components for the successful management of emergencies in the office. They include the provider, staff and ancillaries, the emergency equipment, and medications.
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants will be able to:
• Discuss the importance of being prepared to manage an emergency which could happen at any time
• Discuss common misconceptions in managing medical emergencies
• Appreciate the need to have an office emergency “action plan” which details basic resuscitative measures for the patient
• Identify important duties for the provider, ancillary personnel, and administrative staff
• Identify the basic emergency equipment which should be present in the office
• Review basic airway equipment and airway management
• Discuss basic emergency medications, their basic pharmacology and use
• Review common office emergencies and their management

|Dr. Henry W. Ferguson, Course Co-Director, Vice Chairman of the Augusta University Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Director of Post-Graduate Training earned his dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, GA. After serving nearly 25 years active duty service, retired as a Colonel, then joined the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a member of the American Dental Association and a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the American Dental Society of Anesthesia. He is a Diplomate of the National Dental Board of Anesthesia.|
|Dr. Solon Kao, Course Co-Director, Assistant Professor of the Augusta University Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, received his B.E. in Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1994. He earned his dental degree, with honors, from the University of Tennessee Dental College of Georgia in 1998. Dr. Kao completed an internship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The Louisiana State University, then completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia in 2005.|
|Dr. Lee Getter, Col. Ret., Professor of the Augusta University Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, received his B.A., D.D.S. from New York University and his M.S.D. in Oral Surgery from Baylor University in Dallas. Dr. Getter is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a Fellow of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. He served 21 years in the U.S. Army Dental Corp including a tour as the Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Research in the USAIDR at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and a tour as the Chief Dental Consultant of the Surgeon General of the Army and to the Asst. Surgeon General for Dental Services.|
|Dr. Martin Salgueiro, Assistant Professor of the Augusta University Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, received his dental degree at the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1996. He completed surgical internships at the University of Miami and Vanderbilt University and completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery training at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Salgueiro is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.|
|Dr. Patrick Walker, attended Mississippi State University for undergraduate studies in microbiology. He gained early admittance to the Georgia Health Science University Dental College of Georgia in 2004 following his junior year of undergraduate studies. He completed his D.M.D. in 2008 followed by a one year internship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Augusta University. He is currently one of the new chief residents and will graduate from the residency program June 2013.|
|Dr. Hany Emam, graduated in Oral and Dental Medicine, Cairo University, Egypt and after completing his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency in Egypt, he joined the teaching staff and earned a Master’s degree in mandibular trauma. Currently, he is one of the new chief residents in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department at Augusta University. During his current residency, he has succeeded in publishing six articles, two book chapters, and six abstracts. His main research interests are facial trauma, bone augmentation and implantology.|
|Dr. Lori Schumacher Anderson, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Nursing at the Augusta University, College of Nursing. She has over twenty years of acute and critical care nursing experience in various roles ranging from staff to administration and academia. She has been faculty at the College of Nursing since 2000 and has served as faculty and department chair. She holds a doctorate in nursing from Duquesne University, received her Master of Science degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota and her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Creighton University.|

Lecture Sessions will be held in the Allied Health Sciences Building Room EC-1222 on the Augusta University campus. Saturday optional workshop will be held in the College of Allied Health Sciences Simulation Laboratory.
