CEU Procedures and Guidelines
The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is the most commonly used form of recognition and documentation for noncredit continuing education courses and programs. The Division of Professional & Community Education is the official university office responsible for awarding CEUs. Instructors/coordinators who wish to offer CEUs must complete the CEU Request form and submit it to the Division of Professional & Community Education. Submission of this form initiates the approval process for granting CEUs.
Sponsors must submit all appropriate information in order for the request to be considered. Appropriate information includes the CEU Request form, an agenda, a Disclosure Form and a HIPPA form. Disclosure and HIPPA forms can be found under the section entitled “CE Resources-CE Forms”
Requests should be submitted a minimum of four weeks prior to the beginning of the course. CEUs will not be granted for courses already delivered and completed.
Sponsors must not advertise awarding of CEUs before the division grants approval.
Guidelines for Granting CEUs
One Continuing Education Unit represents ten contact hours of participation in an organized educational experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. A decimal fraction of a unit may be awarded for an offering of shorter duration. (For example: 12 participant contact hours = 1.2 CEUs) Non-instructional time such as breaks, meals, introductions, and social events are not included when determining contact hours. A program must be at least one (1) hour in length to qualify for CEUs. CEUs will not be awarded to participants who attend less than 90% of a program.
Basic Criteria to meet CEU Qualifications:
Cost to Grant CEUs
Each CEU activity is reviewed on a case-by-case basis and cost will then be determined. Payment may be made by individuals receiving the certificate or by the sponsoring department or organization. The sponsor is responsible for ensuring payment of the fee.
Record Keeping and Printing of Certificates
CEU participation credit is kept electronically indefinitely. Participants may view their personal continuing education transcript at www.augusta.edu/ce at any time. Activity Directors that request credit letters for their participants will assess a charge of $5.00 per credit letter issued.
